Two New Jersey Engagement Sessions: Bell Labs in the Rain and Asbury Park by the Sea
New Jersey is full of engagement photo locations that feel nothing like each other, often less than an hour apart. Last year we photographed two sessions that show just how different they can be: one among the glass and gardens of the former Bell Labs building in Holmdel on a rainy September evening, and one along the dunes, jetties and historic boardwalk of Asbury Park on a cool, windy afternoon in late March. Different couples, different seasons, different moods, and both galleries still feel completely like the people in them.
Bell Labs in Holmdel: Modern Architecture on a Rainy Evening
The former Bell Labs complex, now known as Bell Works, was designed by Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962. Its vast mirrored glass facade looks out over a reflecting pond, a fountain and wide lawns lined with willows. For couples who love clean lines and mid-century design, few places in New Jersey compare.
The forecast called for rain all evening, and we decided to go ahead anyway. It turned out to be the best decision of the day. Overcast skies give soft, even light that is flattering on every skin tone, and wet grass and glass make colors look deep and rich. And rain has a way of helping couples stop worrying about looking perfect and simply laugh at the weather together.
A clear umbrella turned into our favorite prop. It lets the light through, frames the two of you and gives your hands something to do, which is often all it takes to feel at ease in front of the camera.
As the sky darkened, the building began to glow from within, and a path lined with small lanterns gave us one last, quiet frame before we headed indoors.
That is the other great thing about Bell Works on a rainy day: the enormous indoor atrium, full of light and color, means there is always a dry place to keep shooting.
Asbury Park: Boardwalk History, Dunes and the Atlantic
Asbury Park offers something completely different: salt air, textured sand and a century of Jersey Shore character. We began near Wesley Lake, beside the old Beaux-Arts steam plant that was built in 1930 to heat the Casino and the rest of the boardwalk. The weathered brick and arched windows give photos a timeless, almost European feel.
From there we headed to the dunes. Late winter is an underrated time for the Jersey Shore. The beach is nearly empty, the dune grass turns a warm golden tan and you can wander wherever you like without working around summer crowds.
Then came the ocean. The wind was strong and the water was cold, and that is exactly what made these moments so genuine. Nobody is thinking about their pose when a wave is chasing them up the sand.
Before we wrapped up, we found a bright turquoise wall in town for a pop of color that made a lovely contrast to the soft beach tones.
What These Two Sessions Can Teach You
Should you reschedule an engagement session for rain?
Not always. Light rain and overcast skies can create some of the most romantic photos of your gallery, especially with a clear umbrella and a covered backup spot nearby, as we had at Bell Works. We usually reschedule only for heavy downpours, lightning or high winds, and we make that call together ahead of time.
When is the best time of year for engagement photos at the Jersey Shore?
Summer beaches are beautiful but crowded. Early spring and fall give you softer light, empty sand and room to explore. Plan to finish around sunset, bring a warm layer to wear between shots and be ready to kick off your shoes for a few minutes.
What should you wear?
Both couples chose simple, coordinated outfits in colors that suited their setting. Navy and crisp white looked polished against modern architecture, while a cream sweater, plaid and denim felt right at home on the beach. Choose solid colors or subtle patterns, avoid large logos and pick something you can move in.
Do you need a permit?
Rules change from season to season, so we always check ahead of time. Private properties like Bell Works may ask photographers to register or schedule in advance, and some beach towns have their own policies for professional photography. We take care of those details so you do not have to.
